What folate actually does*
Folate (vitamin B9) is required for DNA synthesis and repair, red blood cell formation, and normal cell division. That last one is the reason it turns up in hair and skin formulas: tissues that renew constantly need a steady supply of new cells, and every new cell needs a full copy of your DNA.
The matrix cells at the base of a growing hair follicle are among the most rapidly dividing cells in the human body, and your skin replaces its outer layer on a cycle of roughly a month. Folate contributes to the normal cell division that keeps those renewal processes supplied.* It is infrastructure, not a growth accelerant — no B vitamin makes hair grow faster than its cycle allows, and we will not tell you otherwise.
Decoding the label: 670 mcg DFE = 400 mcg folic acid
DFE stands for dietary folate equivalents, and it exists because not all folate is absorbed equally. Folic acid — the form used in supplements and fortified foods — is absorbed more efficiently than the folate found naturally in food. The FDA’s conversion counts each microgram of folic acid taken with food as roughly 1.7 mcg DFE, so a label can show one honest number that is comparable across food and supplements.
In practice, on our facts panel:
- 400 mcg folic acid is the amount of the ingredient we actually put in a serving
- 670 mcg DFE is that same amount expressed in the label’s standard unit
- The Daily Value for folate is 400 mcg DFE, so a serving works out to 168% DV
It is one nutrient and one dose, written in two currencies. Any supplement label that lists folate is doing this same conversion — most brands just never explain it. Who commonly falls short
Most people in the US get adequate folate, largely because grain products have been fortified with folic acid since 1998. But intake is not evenly distributed. Groups that more commonly run low include:
- People who eat few leafy greens, legumes, or fortified grains — including many low-carb eaters, who skip the fortified category entirely
- People who drink alcohol regularly, which interferes with folate absorption and metabolism
- People on certain medications — some anticonvulsants and methotrexate among them — where folate status is a known conversation to have with a prescriber
- People with absorption conditions such as celiac or inflammatory bowel disease
- People with common gene variants that affect how efficiently folate is converted to its active form — something to discuss with a doctor, not to self-diagnose from a blog post
If you suspect you sit in one of these groups, a physician can test folate status directly. That is a $30 answer, and it beats guessing.
Food comes first
Folate is genuinely easy to eat. Some everyday numbers, in mcg DFE:
- Lentils, half a cup cooked: about 180
- Spinach, half a cup cooked: about 130
- Asparagus, four spears: about 90
- Avocado, half a cup: about 60
- Fortified breakfast cereal: commonly 100–400 per serving, per the label
A lunch with lentils and a side of greens can clear half the Daily Value on its own. A supplement’s job is to backstop the days that do not look like that — not to replace the days that do.
Our dose in context
We chose 400 mcg of folic acid because it is the reference amount public health guidance is built around — a full DV in the supplement form, not a decorative sprinkle and not a stunt. For scale, the tolerable upper intake level for folic acid from supplements and fortified foods is 1,000 mcg per day for adults; our serving sits at 40% of that ceiling, which leaves normal room for fortified foods alongside it.
Two practical notes. If you already take a multivitamin or a prenatal, add up your folic acid totals across products rather than assuming they coexist politely. And if you are pregnant, planning to be, or nursing, folate is precisely the nutrient your doctor wants to manage directly — bring every label to that conversation.
