Every gummy is built on one of two gelling bases: pectin, which comes from fruit, or gelatin, which comes from animal collagen. That single formulation choice determines the texture in your mouth, whether the product fits your diet, and how it holds up in a hot mailbox — so it is worth knowing which one you are chewing.

Where each one comes from

Gelatin is processed collagen, extracted by boiling animal skin, bones, and connective tissue — usually from pigs or cows. It is the classic candy base, the reason traditional gummy bears bounce.

Pectin is a soluble fiber found in fruit cell walls, extracted commercially from citrus peel and apple pomace. It is the same substance that sets homemade jam. No animal is involved in producing it.

Neither base is present in amounts that matter nutritionally — a gummy contains roughly a gram or two of gelling agent. The choice matters for texture, diet, and stability, not nutrition.

Texture: the bite test

Gelatin gummies are elastic. They bounce back when you press them, resist the first bite, and get chewier as they sit. Gelatin also dissolves at roughly body temperature, which produces that slow-melt mouthfeel — and a tendency to stick in your teeth.

Pectin gummies have a cleaner, shorter bite: firm surface, then a clean break, less chew, no long stringy stretch. They release flavor faster because the gel breaks down mechanically rather than melting. If you have ever compared a European fruit jelly to a gummy bear, you have run this test already. Diet and religion: where gelatin is a hard stop

Because gelatin is rendered from animal tissue, gelatin gummies are off the table for vegetarians and vegans, and pork-derived gelatin is a problem for kosher and halal diets unless certified otherwise. Pectin removes all of that at the base level.

Here is where we owe you precision, though: a pectin base does not automatically make a product vegan — ours isn't. Our gummies use pectin instead of gelatin, but the formula includes 12 mg of marine collagen sourced from tilapia, which is a fish-derived ingredient and a declared fish allergen. There is also coconut, which counts as a tree nut. So the honest summary of our own label reads: no gelatin, vegetarian-unfriendly anyway, not vegan, and not for you if you have fish or tree-nut allergies. Heat and stability: the mailbox problem

Either way, store the bottle below about 77°F, lid tight — heat and humidity age any gummy faster than time does.

Does the base change how the vitamins work?

Not meaningfully. The gelling agent is a delivery vehicle, not an active ingredient — what matters is what's suspended in it and at what dose. A pectin gummy and a gelatin gummy carrying identical actives deliver identical nutrition; both bases break down readily in digestion and release their contents. Pectin is technically a soluble fiber, but at roughly a gram per serving it contributes nothing measurable toward the 25–38 g of daily fiber adults are told to aim for, and no honest brand should imply otherwise. So don't let a base war distract you from the panel that matters: the actives, their doses, and whether those doses are disclosed at all.   • Find the base: scan the Other Ingredients list for the word "gelatin" or "pectin." It is almost always in the first three entries. If gelatin appears anywhere, it is an animal-derived product.
